Natal Moon in Cancer

When a person has his natal Moon in Cancer, it is considered domicile as the Moon is the natural ruler of the sign. There is no better placement for our Earth’s satellite in a natal chart, as its potency reaches the highest level.  Of course, this can be a double-edged knife, as it may appear quite difficult to tame such a powerful Moon. When located in Cancer, the Moon is difficult to control. Traditionally connected with the sea and everything liquid, Cancer is a feminine sign – and having the Moon in it will furthermore empower its feminine energy. The Moons swims wonderfully in the Cancerian spiritual waters, and opens the gates to the outer realms.  Of course, it also grants all the typical characteristics that a person should expect from a Cancer to have, especially concerning the emotional expression of the native.

As the Moon is generally governing our emotional traits, its presence in Cancer will make the native’s emotions even more moody. Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac, and as we already mentioned has the Moon as its ruling celestial body. It is strongly connected with the fourth house, and all the life matters that are ruled by it. It belongs to the cardinal signs along with Aries, Libra and Capricorn. It is moist and fertile, offering plentifulness.

In the sign of Cancer, the Moon is in its own realm, and some astrologers consider the first decan of the sign to give the most potent degrees. This is probably connected to the fact that the Moon’s degree of exaltation is the 3rd of Taurus, and thus the first degrees of Cancer form a sextile to it. Yet, it is definite that the Moon is extremely powerful in all the degrees of Cancer. For more information about the Moon’s potency in the signs you can read the article about the Moon’s Essential Dignities.

We should also note that the Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, as it is the quickest moving celestial body. This means that for calculating the exact placement and sign of our natal Moon, we should be as exact as we can with our time of birth. In some occasions, where the Moon is near the cusp of a new sign, even a mistake of a couple of hours can give us a different Moon sign result.

The Moon is the second brightest object in the sky, our planet’s satellite which influences with its orbit the biorhythms of life. The Moon is impersonated by the ancient Greek goddesses  Selene and Artemis (Latin Diana). The Moon governs all liquids on our Earth, even on a physical level. The Moon’s movement has a direct effect on the tides of the sea, while also on the body liquids of plants and live organisms. It is connected with the divine feminine, and in our charts represents our own mother, other “mother figure” people of our lives, while also our relations to the female gender. When it is in Cancer, we can say that it gives the exact and clear archetype mentioned before, as no energies of other planets are involved. We are talking about sheer and clear Moon energy.

Thus, a Cancer Moon gives a Cancerian type of mother. Very feminine, very emotional and probably rather protective. The native’s mother may be solely dedicated to raising her child, and usually stays at home, being involved in cooking and generally providing everything that the child needs. The Moon and Cancer are ruling the fourth house, and so his mother is the exact example of the primary feminine.

Try to travel backwards with your fantasy, down the ladder of human evolution. Before the trans-Saturnian planets discovery (which had an effect on the progress of technology and gave even more complexity to our lives). And then, even more backwards, to the times where the human beings would be still so spiritually young that they could recognize only two vital powers, two celestial bodies as the core of their existence. The Sun  and the Moon, the male and the female, the hunter and the housewife. This second, is exactly what the Moon in Cancer still represents. The core archetype of the woman . All these traits are passing to the native when he is a child as stereotypes; these later manifest in his own life through his sentiments, while also in all the life areas which the Moon rules in his chart.

The native is emotionally bonded to his mother, and will never stop being close to her. Even when the mother passes away, he will need to continue feeding that Moon and will subconsciously substitute her, by placing another female in this “throne”. A problem that may arise in men charts with such a placement is that such strong connection to his mother may create difficulties in relationships. The native may have his mother higher than his significant other, and his mother will also not be willing to let go of his son. In female charts, this placement usually does not bring complications.

If the native’s Moon is well aspected, he will perceive his mother as a very nurturing person, always present to support him. He has received a lot of love, and she has helped him develop his emotional side.  His mother can frequently be of the sign of Cancer. Alternatively, his mother may have a lot of planets in Cancer, or her Moon strong by placement and aspects. An adversely aspected Moon may indicate that the mother has problems concerning oversensitivity, or may be overprotective. In extreme cases, their relationship describes the Oedipus syndrome, where the mother and the child are subconsciously in love with each other. In addition, bad aspects to the Moon give a mother with hysterical tendencies and mentally unstable, having constant and sudden mood swings. She may be constantly pushing the native to dedicate himself to her, and demanding emotional reassurances. Of course, such extremes need difficult aspects to the Moon from other malefic planets, such as oppositions, squares or conjunctions from Mars, Saturn or Pluto.

The Moon in Cancer indicates strong emotional attachments, and difficulties can appear when a relationship ends. The Moon placed here brings melancholy and nostalgia, and can create jealousy and even obsession – if Pluto is somehow involved with an aspect. For sure, this placement is also responsible for quite a lot of tears – we should not forget how it affects liquids on a physical level. Of course, tears can be also created by joy. Cancer Moon people cannot hide their emotions – their body responds without control and is highly sensitive. Emotions can be rather fragile; a Cancer Moon native may be easily offended, but the moody traits of the Moon can easily make them forgive and forget. Occasionally, old memories of such events can appear, along with the desire of revenge. Yet, Moon in Cancer individuals will usually not stall over such issues, unless Pluto or Mars dictates the opposite through some hard aspect.

A Cancer Moon person tends to decide by emotion rather than logic. This can be wonderful in his love affairs, as he can experience affection a lot deeper than other Moon signs. His whole existence can manifest through his sentiments, and when he falls in love the world around him will melt. Such an aspect may make someone so focused on the desired person that nothing else in the world will interest him – for as long as these emotions last. It is a tsunami of feelings, that no borders can keep from flooding every single part of his mind and soul. This is definitely a blessing, which other people might not be even able to understand. On the other hand, such a behavior based solely on instincts does not leave place for logic. This may lead to quite a lot of trouble, mostly through having feelings for the wrong people. A Cancer Moon person will wear his pink glasses, seeing only what he wants to see in the desired one. This, in turn, can make him be used or mislead, as he will not pay attention to any possible negative facts, details and behaviors of the desired individual. In case that the things don’t go well, the emotional burden is usually very heavy. Especially if the Moon is somehow touched by Saturn, chronic depression can get triggered by difficult emotional events. Also, such a natal placement can give to the native the blues without apparent reason – even if his emotional life goes well. This is definitely connected with the phases of the moon, and such manifestations will usually pass in a couple of days. A person who has his natal Moon in Cancer should observe his ups and downs, and will maybe even discover a monthly pattern. In charts of females, it will probably be also connected with their menstrual cycle.

Cancer Moon natives are very romantic and will always love to express their feelings, mostly with direct actions that are connected with taking care of another person. As the Moon and Cancer also rule food, cooking for another person may be a usual activity that shows affection. Of course, they also adore receiving daily attention through such actions, and will feel rather awkward if there is a break in the pattern of similar events. Constant care is desired and even needed, and anxiety can develop when they feel insecure and are afraid that things are about to change. There are tendencies to worry, and a usual fear such people have is that the other person does not love them so much as they do.

Naturally, individuals with their natal Moon placed in Cancer will have home and family high in their priorities. This may be a life goal, as a subconscious need to recreate the pleasant atmosphere they experienced at home in their own childhood. They are good hosts, always ready to accommodate guests and offer them a wonderful stay. Socially, people with this placement can be rather shy, or may simply prefer to pass a lot of time in their home. They will even prefer socializing in their own comfortable surroundings, than going outside. The feeling of safety that their home offers to them makes them enjoy their cave more than the jungle outside. Yet, they should be a little bit careful to not be absorbed by daily habits and routines connected to their home, as they will lose a lot of precious time which they could use for more important things.

Cancer is one of the signs that are most open to the other realms. The Moon placed here may indicate that psychic abilities have passed to the native through his mother, grandmother and other female ancestors of his family. Such people usually make good mediums, have prophetic abilities through dreams and a very strong intuition. They can frequently read the emotions of other people and are strong channels of receiving and transmitting information through non-conventional ways. The presence of water in their geographical surroundings may further empower their abilities. In some cases, this placement makes them sleepwalkers, or may elsehow grant them weird powers during their sleep or during certain phases of the Moon.

If a male Cancer Moon has his Moon in the 1st house, or in the 12th and near the Ascendant, he may have quite a lot of female characteristics both in his appearance and his behavior. This does not necessarily affect his sexuality; he just has been subconsciously copying his mother’s behaviors and recreating them in his everyday reality. By strengthening the life areas ruled by Mars and the Sun, such a person can balance the strong feminine characteristics that natal Moon in Cancer grants him.

Another strong trait of having the natal Moon in Cancer is the love of water. People with such a placement may have hobbies connected with it, and will be quite happy if they live near the sea, lakes or rivers. If you are born under this Moon sign, consider empowering yourself by meditating in such places, or doing some everyday activity that is connected to it. Learn to clean yourself through water, and especially how to expel any negative emotions.
